Bangladesh is set to receive over 100,000 Covid-19 vaccine doses developed by Pfizer-BioNTech through COVAX, a platform to ensure coronavirus shots reach those in greatest need. The first batch of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine doses will arrive in-country at midnight on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) has granted for the emergency use of Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh had previously only approved the AstraZeneca, Russia's Sputnik-V, and China's Sinofarm vaccine. Pfizer is the fourth approved vaccine to be used in the country.

DGDA Director General  Major General Mahbubur Rahman came up with the information of approval of Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine on Thursday. Now there is no legal impediment to the import and use of this vaccine.

COVAX is led by the World Health Organization, and has promised to deliver 2 billion doses of safe and effective vaccines to at least 172 countries by the end of 2021.
