The country’s total power generation has exceeded 23,000 MW till the first day of 2021. With this, Bangladesh has gone one step further on the path of 100 percent electrification. The announcement of electrification in all homes across the country is now just a matter of time.

Bangladesh is going to be the first country in South Asia to supply 100 percent of electricity to the villages. In this list, countries like India and Pakistan also lag far behind Bangladesh. Bangladesh will reach this milestone before the 50th anniversary of Independence.

Prime Minister’s Energy Adviser Dr. Tawfiq-e-Elahi said after the country became Independent, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman restructured the country’s power sector with the help of Russia. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been maintaining the continuity of this, as a result, Bangladesh is going to record 100% electrification through her hands.

Explaining the reason for this success, Tawfiq-e-Elahi said that when the Awami League first came to power in 1996, the country’s power generation was very poor. “The service was adopted first through the Independent Power Producer (IPP) policy. At that time Sheikh Hasina brought Barge Mounted power for fast power generation,” he said.

He said Jamaat-BNP stopped these projects from 2001 to 2006, resulting in the suffering of the countrymen from the new power crisis. “When the Awami League came to power again in 2009, the power sector was completely changed. The result is this 100% electrification. Electricity will be on in every house of the country by next March,” he added.

Bangladesh has crossed this long path of 100% electrification from absolutely zero. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started the power generation with a capacity of 300 MW. With his initiative at that time, Bangladesh is now dreaming of exceeding 30,000 MW power supply.

So far, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated 100 percent electrification in 26 upazilas of the country. The remaining 173 upazilas also got electricity. However, electrification will be officially inaugurated in these places.

According to the power distribution company REB, 461 upazilas in their grid have received full power so far. Electrification work is underway in Rangabali upazila of Patuakhali district which is off-grid. Currently, there are 140 power plants in the country. There are also a few more plants under construction.
