A two-week Bangladesh-India joint military training exercise will begin at Bangabandhu Senanibas (BBS) Cantonment, Tangail from Saturday.

The Indian army contingent comprising 170 personnel will arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital tomorrow by an Indian Air Force special aircraft to participate in the exercise titled ‘SAMPRITI-8’ from March 02 to 15, a press release of Indian High Commission in the city said on Thursday.

This is the 8th edition of the joint training exercise named ‘Sampriti’ that was first held in Assam, India in 2011 and since then both the countries have been hosting the exercise alternatively.

The exercise is aimed to strengthen and broaden the aspects of interoperability and cooperation between Bangladesh and Indian Army and enrich from each other’s experience while carrying out counter insurgency or counter terrorism operations, said the release.

The holding of such joint exercises is symbolic of the strong defence cooperation between the two countries, it said.

The Indian Army contingent will leave the country on March 16 after completion of the exercise.
