A court here on Thursday granted bail to Shafat Ahmed, the prime accused in the sensational Banani double rape case and son of Apan Jewellers’ owner Dildar Ahmed.

Judge Khademul Kayes of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 passed the order following a bail petition filed by Shafat’s lawyer Kazi Nojibullah Hiru, said Chief Public Prosecutor of Dhaka Metropolitan Session’s Judge Court M Abdullah Abu.

On May 6, 2017, a university student filed the case with Banani Police Station accusing Shafat and Shadman Sakif of raping her and another girl and three others of abetting them.

According to the case statement, two youths, including Shafat, raped the plaintiff and another university girl on March 28 at a birthday party at The Raintree Dhaka in the capital’s Banani area while three others assisted them.

The three other accused are Nayeem Ashraf alias Halim, Shafat's driver Billal Hossain and bodyguard Rahmat Ali.
