South Koran K-Pop group BTS has been named the best-selling artists of 2020 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the organization that represents the global recorded music industry, on Thursday.
According to BBC, the IFPI named the Korean boyband for the best-selling artists who released two top-chart albums in 2020 – ‘Map of the Soul: 7’ and ‘Be’.
The award is given as per an artist or group’s worldwide sales, downloads and streams, covering their whole work.
BTS beat international pop stars like Taylor Swift who crowned the best-selling artists of 2019 – where the boyband placed second in the same year.
Besides, Canadian rapper Drake came third. The Weeknd came fourth and Billie Eilish at number five.
BTS, also known as the Bangtan Boys, was formed in 2013 and consists of seven members — Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook — all are hailing from South Korea.
They have subsequently become standard-bearers for the K-pop scene, selling millions of records and concert tickets, while racking up billions of streams.
Last year, the band floated Big Hit Entertainment on the Korean stock market, resulting in the band members receiving a $108 million (£77 million) windfall.
“BTS is a global phenomenon. They have had another outstanding year... and continually finding creative and engaging ways to share their story with the world,” said Frances Moore, chief executive of IFPI.
“They truly show the power that music has to bring joy and happiness to people all over the world,” he added. – BBC.
