BTRC get 14 days to shut down unregistered news portal

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has been given two more weeks to comply with the High Court's order to shut down unregistered online news portals in the country. The court has fixed October 25 for the next hearing and order in this regard.

On Tuesday (September 28), a HC division bench comprising Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah passed the order after holding a hearing on a supplementary plea filed in the regard.

On September 14, the High Court ordered authorities concerned to shut down all the unregistered online news portals in the country. The High Court directed the court to execute the order within seven days of receiving a copy of the order and submit it to the court in the form of a report.

Barrister Jarin Rahman and Advocate Rashida Chowdhury Neelu stood for the writ petition before the court on Tuesday. Advocate Farzana Sharmin stood for BTRC. On the other hand, Deputy Attorney General Barrister Nowroz Mohammad was present at the hearing on behalf of the state.

The BTRC told the court that a list of all registered online news portals and unregistered online news portals has been sought from the Information Ministry. But the list has not been given by the Ministry of Information yet. As soon as the list is received, steps will be taken to shut down the unregistered online news portal.

The court granted two weeks following the petition and fixed for October 25 for next hearing.
