A third-year student of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science & Technology University (BSMRSTU) was beaten severely by the locals at around 9 pm on Saturday night.

The victim was identified as Maruf is a third-year student of the university’s International Relations Department.

According to Maruf and eyewitnesses, the shopkeeper Liton, a local shopkeeper from Pathalia village, gave a recharge of Tk 109 on Maruf's mobile on Saturday night. When he was given a Tk 1,000 note, he was unable to pay the changes. Then Maruf gave him Tk 110. But Liton was angry on Maruf and reviled him about why he didn’t give the Tk 110 at first instead of note Tk 1000. At one point the words of the two went fiery. Litton with other associate shopkeepers beat Maruf calling him a thief. When more students gathered there upon receiving the incident, Liton and his men fled.

Proctor Dr. Raziur Rahman said "We strongly condemn the attack on our students," “I sent the police to the scene. However, upon receipt of the complaint in writing from the victim student, the university administration will take appropriate action against the attackers.”
