Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has recommended an 80 percent hike of bus fares due to the decision to carry half-seat passengers to prevent coronavirus transmission.

BRTA said the rule would apply to all buses and minibusses. The recommendation was made at a meeting of the BRTA’s Cost Analysis Committee on Saturday. The meeting was attended by BRTA officials, bus owners, and workers’ representatives.

It has been decided at the meeting that each bus would be able to carry half the number of passengers than seats and bus service will start from Monday, June 1.

BRTA chairman Yusuf Ali Mollah said at the briefing that 20 passengers would be transported in the 50-seat bus. As a result, passengers will have to pay almost double the fare to meet the cost of operating the bus. It has been decided to follow the hygiene rules for Coronavirus.

Abul Kalam, vice-president of the Road Transport Owners Workers Association, said the fare would not be effective once the Coronavirus situation will be under control. If the passengers do not have masks, the bus owner will provide them. Drivers will be given PPE.

Due to the coronavirus crisis, the government has imposed restrictions on public transport from March 26. On Thursday, the cabinet division issued an order allowing limited public transport. After that, BRTA and BIWTA had a separate meeting with the bus and launch owners on Friday regarding the management of public transport in accordance with the health regulations.

On the other hand, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has decided to resume launch transport in existing fares from Sunday. However, a technical committee will be formed to decide whether the rent will increase.
