The High Court on Monday granted a six-month bail to BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah in a corruption case.

The single-member bench of Justice Md Sowkat Hossain passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Rafiqul's lawyers challenging his three-year sentence in the graft case.

At the same time, the court also stayed the fine imposed by the trial court.

AJ Mohammad Ali and Barrister Ragib Rouf Chowdhury filed the appeal on Sunday.

On November 20, the BNP leader was arrested by plainclothes police hours after a Dhaka court had sentenced him to three years' jail in a graft case filed by the Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC) for amassing illegal wealth.

He was later sent to the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.

Later on Sunday, he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) from the jail as he fell ill.

The BNP leader has been suffering from diarrhea, diabetes and blood pressure.
