A Dhaka court today sent Mir Mohammad Helaluddin, son of BNP leader Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin, to jail in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Judge SM Ruhul Imran of the Special Judge Court-2 of Dhaka passed the verdict after his lawyer Masud Ahmed Talukder submitted a petition seeking bail in the case.

Another accused in the case Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin has not yet surrendered to the court.

On March 6, 2007, ACC filed a case against Mir Nasiruddin and his son Mir Helaluddin with the Gulshan police station over charges of illegal acquisition and concealment of assets.

Mir Nasir was sentenced to 13 years and Mir Helal to three years in prison.

Mir Nasir and Mir Helal filed separate appeals in the High Court against the verdict. In August 2010, the High Court allowed the appeal and canceled the verdict.

The ACC appealed against the High Court's verdict. Following the hearing, the Appellate Division quashed the judgment of the High Court on July 3, 2014. At the same time, the High Court directed re-hearing of the separate appeal filed by the father and son against the sentence. Following the hearing, the High Court gave its verdict on November 19 last year.
