BGMEA, an organization of garment exporters, has set up a PCR lab in Gazipur on its own initiative to test the coronavirus infection of garment workers.

BGMEA President Dr. Rubana Haque inaugurated the lab through a virtual press conference on Thursday.

She said the lab at Chandra in Gazipur is one of the most modern in the world. It can test 180 samples per shift. And 16 staff will work on it. However, the number of shifts and machines will be increased as required.

The results of this COVID-19 test lab are also to be “100 percent” correct, said Dr. Rubana Haque.

She added that 264 garment factory workers have been affected by coronavirus so far. 202 of them are males and 72 are females.

BGMEA President Dr. Rubana Haque presided over the inauguration ceremony of the lab. Others present included Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque, Prime Minister’s Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam, FBCCI and former BGMEA president Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, former BGMEA president Salam Musherdi, etc.

When asked ‘will any action be taken against the companies laying off their employees?’, Dr. Rubana Haque replied, “BGMA will not take any action against those who will lose their jobs. However, the issue of factory workers who lost their jobs in April and May will be looked into.”
