Bangladesh is in the top position among the hilsa enriched countries in the world where Bangladesh accounts for 80 percent of the hilsa production between 11 countries.

The information was given at the 10th meeting of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock at the Parliament House on Thursday.

“Hilsa production is not just limited to Chandpur, Barishal and Bhola - they is available in various rivers and haors in Rajshahi, Rangpur and greater Sylhet,” said the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.  

The meeting was discussed the amount of budget allocation in the Fisheries Department for the fiscal year 2018-19, the amount of organization-based expenditure and the success and progress of the work by the Department. 

Besides, the progress of recruitment and updating of the manpower for the central cattle breeding and dairy farm Savar was reviewed.

At the beginning of the meeting, the committee congratulated the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) for getting the Ekushey Padak award in recognition of their contribution to the field of research. Presided over Dhirendra Debnath Shambhum, the chairman of the committee – committee members Nazma Akter, Shamima Akter Khanam and Kaniz Fatema Ahmed participated in the meeting.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the heads of various agencies, including the ministries and officials of the Parliament Secretariat.
