Drug and human traffickers shot dead a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar.
The incident took place at Kachubania village in Sabrang UP of the upazila on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Osman Sikder, vice-president of Teknaf Upazila Chhatra League and son Mohammad Ali of the village.
“Osman Sikder was shot dead in front of his house while going to the mosque to perform Fajr prayers,” confirmed Upazila Chhatra League president Sultan Mahmud.
According to the family sources, Osman Sikder got involved in an argument over the theft of an easybike on 27 December 2020. At that time, Mohammad Shaker, son of former UP member Mohammad Abdullah and Kefayet Ullah, son of Mohammad Qasim of Katabniya, beat him at noon in Sabrang Nayapara Bazar. Osman Sikder lodged a complaint with Teknaf Police Station.
Due to this, the accused blocked Osman while he was going to the mosque for Fajr prayers on Friday and shot him several times before fleeing. Hearing the sound of gunfire, the people of the area rushed to rescue Osman. He was later taken to the upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead, the family members of the deceased said.
Ayub Hossain, a physician at the emergency department of the Upazila Health Complex, said Osman Sikder died before he was taken to the hospital. He has three bullet marks on his body.
Teknaf Model Police Station OC Hafizur Rahman said the accused were listed as drug and human traffickers. There are multiple cases in their name. The body was recovered and sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Another case has been lodged in the incident, he added.
