Awami League’s candidates with ‘boat’ symbol have won by a huge margin in the by-elections of Jashore-6 and Bogura-1 constituencies on Tuesday.
Shaheen Chaklader, general secretary of Jashore district Awami League, has been elected for Jashore-6 (Keshabpur) constituency by getting 1,24,003 votes – his nearest rival BNP candidate Abul Hossain Azad got 2,012 votes with ‘paddy sheath’ symbol. However, Abul Hossain Azad was not in the field as the BNP boycotted the election centrally. Another candidate Habibur Rahman from Jatiya Party got 1,006 votes with ‘plow’ symbol.
Out of the total 2,03,018 voters in Keshabpur constituency, 1,29,067 voters exercised their voting right. Of these, 1,374 votes have been canceled, said Bazlur Rashid, Election Officer of Keshabpur upazila. “63.57 percent of votes have been cast.”
The seat became vacant on January 21 after the death of MP and former State Minister for Public Administration Ismat Ara Sadique.
On the other hand, Sahadara Mannan Shilpi, a candidate for the ‘boat’ symbol in Bogura-1 (Sariakandi-Sonatala) constituency, has been elected unofficially after getting 1,45,295 votes from 123 centers – her nearest rival independent candidate (Truck) Yasir Rahmatullah Intaz got 1,599 votes.
According to sources in the Returning Officer’s Office, the seat declared vacant on January 18 after the death of Abdul Mannan, former organizing secretary of the Central Awami League.
