State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury has said that the Awami League government believes in work and development, not in words. Under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangabandhu, great progress has been made in all areas including the naval, land and skyline in Bangladesh.

The minister made these comments while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the construction of the Nagarbari Modern River Port at the MHDP Model School grounds adjacent to Nagarbari Ghat on Thursday.

The minister said that till 2010, there were only seven dredgers in the shipping ministry. More than 200 dredgers have now been collected under Sheikh Hasina's leadership to further improve the naval route and keep the waterways active.

He added that ferry communication has been remaining stopped for a long time due to the navigational crisis. The ferry communication will be resumed by bringing back the navigability through the dredging.

The State Minister also said that a modern river port will be constructed at a cost of Tk 513 crore and 90 lakhs at the Nagarbari Ghat of Aminpur of Pabna Barra Upazila under the initiative of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA). The project will be completed by June 2021.
