Australia beat South Africa by 5 wickets in super 12 opener

Australia beat South Africa by five wickets in the first game of the Super 12 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 at Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi.

After winning the toss Australia skipper Aaron Finch chose to bowl first and restrict South Africa for 118/9 in 20 overs. In reply, Australia chased down the target in 19.4 overs with five wickets in hand.

Smith 35 off 34 was the best batter for Aussie while Marcus Stoinis, 24 off 16 not out, was the second-highest score. 

Defending a low score of 119, Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada gave South Africa the early wickets they were looking for, removing Aaron Finch and David Warner inside the Powerplay before Keshav Maharaj scalped the in-form Mitchell Marsh.

Australia lost their fifth wickets to 81 when Tabraiz Shamsi outsmarted Glenn Maxwell to send the Australia dugout in absolute shock.

But Mathew Wade and Marcus Stonish took the helm on their shoulders and left the field after confirming victory for Australia in the last over.

For South Africa, Anrich Nortje took 2 for 21 while Tabraiz Shamsi, Keshav Maharaj, and Kagiso Rabada bagged one wicket apiece.

Earlier, Aiden Markram's 40 off 36 and Rabada's handy 20, which included a six and four, ensured the Proteas bat out the 20 overs and post 118/9.

Australia took control of the game against South Africa early on and ensured it didn't slip away, the Proteas was 59/4 at the halfway stage.

South Africa started brightly before Glenn Maxwell and Josh Hazlewood struck, scalping three Proteas wickets in the next four overs.

South Africa did manage to rebuild briefly with a 23-run partnership between Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen. However, Pat Cummins came back into the attack and struck immediately, catching the leading edge of Klaasen's bat as Steve Smith completed a good catch diving forward.

David Millar and Markram post 34 runs for the fifth wickets stand before Zampa sent Millar for 16. 

Aiden Markram fought alone for South Africa before went out for 40 off 36 as the number eight batter to Strac.

For Australia, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa bagged two wickets each while Pat Cummins and Glenn Maxwell got a wicket each.
