Lieutenant Colonel Dewan Mohammad Tasawwar Raja Chowdhury, an Army officer undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka, has been promoted to the rank of Colonel by the Bangladesh Army after a long seven years in a coma after suffering a heart attack. It is to be mentioned that on the day of his retirement on October 12, Lieutenant Colonel Dewan Mohammad Tasawwar Raja Chowdhury was adorned the Colonel badge by the Army authorities at CMH.

Dewan Mohammad Tasawwar Raja Chowdhury was admitted to Dhaka CMH on March 11, 2013, when he fell ill with a heart attack while serving in the Army Headquarters as an officer of the Bangladesh Army’s Armored Corps. But when his condition deteriorated while undergoing treatment, he went into a coma.

Lieutenant Colonel Dewan Mohammad Tasawwar Raja Chowdhury was adorned the Colonel badge by the Army authorities at CMH.

Although advanced medical treatment was arranged abroad on the initiative of Bangladesh Army, his consciousness has not returned till now. However, his body parts are still functioning properly. It is to be mentioned that he has been undergoing treatment at Cabin Nandakunja No. 314 of Dhaka CMH for the last seven years. While here, he was promoted to the rank of colonel. 

The family of Dewan Mohammad Tasawwar Raja Chowdhury expressed their gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff and said that the promotion given to him was an indication of the generosity of the Chief of Army Staff and would further enrich the glorious history of the Bangladesh Army.

Mosleha Munira Raja, wife of Dewan Mohammad Tasawwar Raja Chowdhury, said, “I could not even think of such a great honor bestowed on him. I am very grateful to the authorities of the Bangladesh Army and Combined Military Hospital (CMH). My feelings cannot be expressed in words.”

Brigadier General Masud Majumder, a physician at Dewan Mohammad Tasawwar Raja Chowdhury, who is undergoing treatment at CMH, said, “When his heart was not working after he fell ill, we activated his heart through advanced cardiac support. We are still optimistic about his recovery.”

Newly retired Colonel Dewan Mohammad Taswar Raja Chowdhury was an extraordinary professional, sweet-speaking, smiling, big-hearted officer of the Bangladesh Army. This army officer, who is endowed with many virtues, has shown his talent in various stages including education since his childhood. The officer was one of the leading authors of several books on the Bangladesh Army while he was healthy.

Among them are ‘O General My General’, ‘History of Armored Corps of Bangladesh Army’, and ‘Bangladesh Armored Corps’. He also wrote about special divisions, regiments, and units of the army and the great liberation war of Bangladesh. He also wrote a book about General Muhammad Ataul Goni Osmani, the commander of the Liberation Army of the Great Liberation War, which is in the military libraries of the Bangladesh Army.

Dewan Mohammad Tasawwar Raja Chowdhury is a descendant and great-grandson of the famous mystic poet and Baul artist Hason Raja. He also wrote a book about Hason Raja titled ‘Life and Works of Majestic Poet Hasan Raja’. 

Retired Colonel Dewan Mohammad Tasawwar Raja Chowdhury is the father of two sons and a daughter. His daughter and one son are studying at university.
