The Army has destroyed cannabis fields planted on seven bighas of land on Sunday in Mahalchhari Upazila of  Khagrachari district. Two brothers — Amar Bikash Chakma, 35, and Tulu Chakma — were detained on charges of involvement in the incident.

During in search of armed terrorists in the remote Kalabunia area, the Army found the largest cannabis fields whose market value is about Tk 4 crore, said Major Asif Ikbar, sub-zone commander of Bijitola in Mahalchhari.

“Later, the cannabis trees pulled down and stacked them in one place and burned them with fire.”

It is believed that UPDF, a regional party of the hill, was cultivating the cannabis in tactical and special security by enclosing the fertile land between the two hills to finance their organization, ‍added Major Asif Ikbar

After the legal process, the accused will appear in court and regular cases will be filed, said Md Jahangir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mahalchhari Police Station.
