About 20 houses and hundreds of acres of cropland have been washed away by the Arial Khan River at Kalkini in Madaripur. The people of five villages have lost their homestead to Arial Khan though the recent floodwaters have receded.

Visiting the spot on Wednesday afternoon our local correspondent reported that trees, houses, and croplands on the banks of Arial Khan river flowing over Sahebrampur-Underchar village, 20 km away from the upazila headquarters, have been eroded. More than 50 families are at risk of erosion.

Chandmia Sardar, Bazlul Rahman Sardar, Dadan Sardar, Dudu Mia Sardar, Badsha Sardar, Kamal Howlader and Hasina Begum of Underchar said they had suffered a lot in the recent floods. Before overcoming that havoc, they are on the verge of river erosion. More than 50 homestead and important installations are still at risk. If no action is taken to stop erosion, Arial Khan will devour everything.

Aynal Haque, a member of Ward No. 2 of Underchar, said that the river erosion has ended everything in Rajachar village. I am trying to stand by the affected people.

Sahebrampur UP chairman Kamrul Hasan Selim said an appeal has been made to the higher authorities to stop the erosion of Arial Khan. Hopefully, action will be taken soon.

Alamgir Hossain, UNO of Kalkini, said arrangements would be made to prevent erosion in the area along the Arial Khan River at Sahebrampur-Underchar by dumping geo-bags.
