‘Amar Ekushey’ Book Fair begins today

The month long Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2020 is being started today in the spirit of the language movement of 1952. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the Ekushey Book Fair at 3 pm. This year's book fair has been dedicated to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. From the discussion stage to the decoration- the book fair, the image of Mujib-year is getting extensive importance. The book fair will run from today until February 29. Millions of book lovers people will be lost in the nation’s grant gathering of reader-publisher-writer.

In this regard, the Director-General of Bangla Academy, poet Habibullah Siraji, said that the father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be illuminated at this time. This year’s book fair has been dedicated to Bangabandhu to reflect our consciousness, dreams and activities of the next day. Twenty-five books on Bangabandhu published by the Bangla Academy will be discussed throughout the month. On February 2, the inaugural day of the fair, Bangabandhu's daughter, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, will unveil the third edition of Bangabandhu's ‘Book Amar Dekha Nayachin’ (New China in my eyes) published by the Bangla Academy.

‘From this year to 2022, which includes the birth centenary of Bangabandhu and the golden jubilee of the country’s independence’, Habibullah Siraji said: “The Bangla Academy has taken a 3-year plan to publish one hundred books on various topics of Bangabandhu.”

This year, the biggest book fair of the history is going to be placed that is 8 lakhs and 50 thousand square feet is size comprising 873 units which were rented to 560 publishing companies and 34 pavilions allotted to 33 publishers including the Bangla Academy.

This is the first time the Little Mag Square has been built in Suhrawardy Udyan. Children's quarters were also set up at the same place. The Shishu Prohor will be announced during the fair. This year's fair will include all the participating institutions, including Bangla Academy, which will sell books at 25 per cent commission. There are three paths in the Bangla Academy premises for entering the fair and six routes for entering and exiting at Suhrawardy Udyan. Besides, there is a ‘Lekhak Bolsi’ desk organizing to the unveiling of the new books.

On the overall security of the fair, member secretary of the fair management committee Md. Jalal Ahmed said that last year, one thousand policemen were in charge of security. This time it has risen to one and half a thousand. With that, the number of Ansar members has also increased. Due to the election of the city corporation, the fair started after 1 day but there is no opportunity to extend the deadline. Because of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu, we will make the Suhrawardy Udyan free by March 3.

In the context of Coronavirus panic, Dr Jalal Ahmed said that this year's Amar Ekushey Library will be careful about coronavirus. This has been discussed in our meetings. “We had discussions with the health department. They will cooperate wholeheartedly. The civil surgeon's office in Dhaka will also assist us.”
