‘Alor Ferrywala’ Polan Sarkar passes away

Ekushey Padak winner Polan Sarkar, who distributed books for free among the people, died on Friday at 12:00 pm in his own residence (Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un). 

The 98-year-old had been suffering from old-age complications.

Polan Sarkar received the Ekushey Padak in 2011, started a social movement of reading books by reaching reader’s house and bought them book at his own money. 

On September 20, 2014, on the occasion of ‘Impact Journalism Day’, the stories of his read books movement was published on the main daily of different languages of the world. 

He has received many awards all over the country. A play named ‘Sayanhne Surjadoy’ was made a basis on him. He is also called as ‘Alor Ferrywala’ (the distributor of light). 

Polan Sarkar was born in 1921. His real name is Harez Uddin. But the village people know him as Polan Sarkar. He was the president of a local high school management council.
