At least 45 Taliban commanders and civilians had been killed in airstrikes by Afghan forces, local officials said on Wednesday.

An IRI correspondent quoted the governor of Adraskan District in the eastern Afghanistan province of Herat said that 45 Taliban members had been killed in an airstrike on a Taliban rally in the city, 16 others were injured.

At least eight civilians were killed in Wednesday’s airstrikes, Adraskan district governor Ali Ahmad Faqir Yar said.

“Forty-five people had been killed so far in airstrikes by security forces in the Kham Ziarat area. Taliban were among those killed,” he said on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Afghan army on Wednesday detained four members of the militant group Daesh (IS) from the eastern province of Nangarhar. In other news from Kabul, unidentified gunmen shot dead three Afghan traffic policemen in the province of Samangan.

The US is winding back troop numbers under an agreement with the Taliban struck in February, which was meant to pave the way for formal peace talks between the insurgents and the Afghan government.
