Air India Delhi-Moscow flight returns midway as pilot has COVID-19

An Air India flight flying from Delhi to Moscow has been forced to return midway when the pilot of the unmanned aircraft was found infected with the coronavirus.

The Air India plane took off from Delhi after 7 am today under the mission 'Vande Bharat' to repatriate expatriate Indians and returned to the national capital at 12:30 pm, sources said.

However, the controversy could not be avoided. The Civil Aviation Authority has directed an investigation to find out at what stage the incident took place due to negligence.

Air India conducts at least 200 coronavirus tests a day in Delhi alone for all its crew ahead of all flights that they operate. The results of these tests are centrally processed by the airline.

Another plane will be sent to bring back the Indians stranded in Russia, officials said. The pilots will be tested for coronavirus before allow to fly.

The country's foreign ministry says New Delhi has launched the 'Vande Bharat' Mission since May 7 to bring back stranded nationals in various countries around the world due to coronavirus epidemic. So far 45,000 Indians have been flown home from abroad under the centre's "Vande Bharat Mission". One lakh more Indians will be flown home till June 13.
