The Taliban will allow girls to return to school “as soon as possible” in Afghanistan, a party spokesman said this after filling all the cabinet posts on Tuesday.
Regarding the girls’ return to school, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said, “We are finalizing everything. This will be announced soon.”
Earlier, Afghanistan’s interim cabinet education minister announced all high school boys, students and male teachers would return to class. Various quarters started criticizing for not making any announcement for women to return to school. They feared that the “Taliban might not allow women to return to school as they did during the 1996-2001 regime”.
However, the Taliban said the announcement for the girls to return to school will come soon.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid did not comment on the now-closed women’s affairs ministry. The ministry was closed last week.
The Taliban have replaced the ministry with a ministry of ethics. The office was under the Taliban government from 1996 to 2001, BBC reported.
Zabiullah Mujahid said the health ministry had been added to the Taliban’s interim government. On filling the cabinet, he said the announced posts are seen as important to keep the government afloat. Earlier this month, the Taliban named 26 members of the interim government.
