Action will be taken against uploading content like pornography on social media and entertainment platforms, said the Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud.
He came up with the development after a courtesy call on newly-appointed Indian Ambassador to Bangladesh Vikram Kumar Doraiswami at Information Ministry of the Secretariat on Tuesday.
The Information Minister said, "We think that all the content that is put up in conflict with the culture and social values of our country is playing a role in spreading this disease (rape). So we will take strict action against them who are behind this."
In response to BNP's comment on the death penalty for rape, the Information Minister said, "Did the BNP not like it? The statement made by the BNP raises the question that the BNP did not like the amendment of this law."
He said the government had amended the law keeping death penalty as the highest punishment for rape. Because, you know, there was a time when acid throwing increased in Bangladesh. But the acid throwing has decreased when the law was enacted with the provision of severe punishment. Now almost no acid throwing happens. In the same way, I think that keeping the provision of maximum punishment will reduce crimes like rape.
The government is emphasizing not only the amendment of the law but also the speedy trial of rape, he said.
