Abhijit murder: 5 including Zia to die, one gets life term

The court today has sentenced five people including Sayed Mohammad Ziaul Haque alias Maj (sacked) Zia to die and one to life imprisonment in the murder case of blogger and writer Avijit Roy.

Judge Md Majibur Rahman of the Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal of Dhaka handed over the verdict against six accused on Tuesday.

The convicted accused are – Sayed Mohammad Ziaul Haque alias Maj (sacked) Zia, Akram Hossain, Abu Siddiq Sohel, Mozammel Hossain Saimon, Arafat Rahman Siam. 

Another accused Shafiur Rahman Farabi sentenced to life imprisonment.

Among the accused – Major Zia and Akram are still absconding, while the rest are in jail.

On February 4, the court set the date for the verdict after presenting the arguments of the state and the accused.

The court heard the testimony of 28 out of 34 witnesses in the case. On January 21, the third investigating officer in the case, Inspector Monirul Islam of the police’s counter-terrorism unit, testified before the court as the last witness.

On January 27, the four accused, who were detained in the jail pleaded not guilty before the court and sought justice. Presenting the state arguments, the tribunal’s public prosecutor Advocate Golam Sarwar Zakir demanded the death penalty for the six convicts.

The lawyer of the defendants, on the other hand, pleaded not guilty on behalf of the accused.

According to the case, US-based Bangladeshi blogger Avijit Roy and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya were hacked near the TSC of Dhaka University on February 26, 2015, by a gang of assailants when the couple was walking out of the Ekushey Boi Mela at around 9:15 pm.

The next day, on February 27, Abhijit’s father, Ajay Roy, a prominent academic and former professor of physics at Dhaka University, filed a murder case with the Shahbagh Police Station.
