Abdul Quader Mirza wins in Basurhat municipality

With 10,738 votes Abdul Quader Mirza, the younger brother of Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, has been elected mayor of Basurhat municipality in Noakhali.
District Election and Returning Officer Rabiul Alam confirmed the results of the election on Saturday evening.
He said Awami League candidate Abdul Quader Mirza got 10,738 votes, BNP candidate Kamal Uddin Chowdhury got 1,738 votes and Jamaat-backed independent candidate Maulana Mosharraf Hossain got 1,451 votes.
It is reported that for the first time in Basurhat municipality of Noakhali the voters were seen standing in long lines to cast their votes using EVM. The voting started at 8 am on Saturday in the presence of a large number of voters and continued uninterruptedly till 4 pm.
Basurhat municipality, established in 1990, has a total population of about 40,000. The number of voters is 21,115. Of which 10, 494 are women and 10, 621 are men.
