ACC quizzes Regent’s Shahed

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) questioned Mohammad Shahed, chairman of Regent Hospital, in a case filed over money laundering.

Shahed was brought from the central jail in Keraniganj to the Anti-Corruption Commission's Segunbagicha office. Then a team led by ACC Deputy Director Abu Bakar Siddique started questioning him. Shahed is being questioned in a case of embezzling more than Tk2 crore from the Gulshan corporate branch of Padma Bank (formerly Farmers Bank).

Earlier on August 10, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayes granted Shahed a seven-day remand in a money laundering case.

On July 27, Mohammad Shahjahan Miraj, deputy assistant director of ACC, head office, filed the case against Shahed and four others at the ACC's integrated district office in Dhaka-1. The next day, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayesh accepted the statement of the case and fixed August 16 for submission of the report.

It is alleged in the case that the accused misused their power and embezzled Tk 1 crore from Padma Bank Limited's Gulshan corporate branch in the name of loan through money transfer and mutual conversion. The ACC filed a case against the accused in this incident.

The three others accused in the case are Mahbubul Haque Chishti, former chairman of the executive audit committee of the board of directors of Padma Bank, Rashedul Haque Chishti, managing director (MD) of Bakshiganj Jute Spinners Limited, and managing director of Regent Hospital,l (MD) Ibrahim Khalil.

On July 15, Rapid Action Battalion arrested Shahed with illegal arms in a special drive from the bank of the Labangaboti river in Komarpur village around 5:00 am.

On July 16, the court granted a 10-day remand to Shahed Karim in a fraud case of Uttara West police station. On July 26, the court granted him 28 days remand in three cases in Uttara West police station and a case in Uttara East police station. On the same day, his 10-day remand was granted in an arms case in Satkhira.
