8 gets life term over Juba League leader Zakir murder

A court in Jhenaidah today has sentenced eight people to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of Juba League leader Zakir Hossain Mandal in the district. At the same time, each of them was fined Tk 5,000 and seven years imprisonment under the Explosives Act.
Judge Md. Shawkat Hossain, Additional Sessions Judge of the First Court, announced the verdict on Monday.
The other accused in the case – Nasir Uddin Malitha, the current chairman of Ganna UP of Sadar Upazila, has been acquitted as the charges against him was not proved and Mashiur Rahman and Ujjal Hossain have been dropped from the case as they died.
The convicts are – Shanti Hossain, Abdul Karim, Lavlu, Abu Jahid Moni, Mizanur Rahman alais Taak Mizan, Ibrahim Khalil, Mukul and Nasi. All the accused are the residents of Ganna UP of Sadar upazila.
According to the case details, Zakir Hossain Mandal Shanti, the joint convener of the then Union Juba League, was returning home on a motorcycle from Ganna Bazar on July 7, 2010. On his way to Kashimnagar Bridge, the miscreants targeted him and bombed him. He was seriously injured. From there he was first treated at Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital and later at Faridpur Medical College Hospital. When his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to a private hospital in Dhaka. He died on the morning of July 11 while undergoing treatment.
Sirajul Islam Malitha, the father-in-law of the deceased, filed two separate cases under the Murder and Explosives Act against the accused. After investigation, the police filed chargesheets against 11 people. The court on Monday announced its verdict in the case after taking evidence from 19 witnesses and a lengthy judicial process.
