A Dhaka court today sentenced eight people to life imprisonment in a case filed over the murder of one Alek Miah in capital’s Turag area. The court also fined them Taka 10 thousand each, or to suffer six months more behind the bars in default.
Judge Iqbal Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 passed the verdict on Thursday.
The convicts are Alal Uddin, Joynal Abedin, Abdur Rajjak, Abdus Sattar, Abdul Jabbar, Awal Miah alias Awal, Samar Ali and Tamij Uddin.
The court also sentenced Sohel Rana, Sohrab Miah, Babul Miah, and Firoz Miah to 1.5-year imprisonment under separate sections of the act. Accused Barek, Mostafa and Md Omar Ali were acquitted from the case.
The court on February 4 had set today to pronounce the judgment as both the prosecution and defence concluded their arguments in the case on that day.
According to the case documents, the convicts, who had disputes with Alek Miah over land, stormed into the latter’s house on June 25, 2008, and started to beat everyone with rod, machetes, hockey sticks, and other sharp weapons.
They took Alek Miah to the rooftop and thrashed him mercilessly. Family members rushed him to local hospital after the attackers left, but the attending doctor declared him dead at the hospital.
