66,000 homeless families to get homes this month

A total of 66,000 landless and homeless families are going to get brick-built houses in the country this month with the following of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's gifts of homes for 0.9 million homeless families on the occasion of Mujib Borsho. 

After the inspection of Ashrayan Project-2, the information has been come out while the officials concerned with the project also talked about that on the spot.  

The Ashrayan Project-2 is being implemented through a task force comprising the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, district and upazila administrations, local MPs, other elected representatives, and well-wishers. 

According to the Ashrayan Project-2, all the landless and homeless families in the country have already been listed with the aim of implementing the declaration of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina "not a single person in Bangladesh would remain homeless." However, the list has included a total of 2,93,361families who are homeless and landless. 

On the other hand, there are 5,92,261 families who have land but remain houseless and a total of 8,85,622 families will be provided housing by the government in phases. The construction cost of each house built on two hundred acres of land is tk 1,71,000 where the each two-room house has a kitchen, an attached toilet and the necessary space for use, those who are landless will also be given ownership of house on 200 decimal of land. 

In the first phase, the construction of houses for about 66,000 families across the country on the basis of priority of landless-homeless widows, helpless, elderly, destitute and disabled has been almost completed. The houses will be given to the beneficiaries completely free of cost. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will distribute the houses to landless and homeless people in the running month.  

Apart from the government, politicians, government and non-government officials and rich have joined the initiative to provide houses to the homeless. There are 2,896 public representatives in different parts of the country, 99 in various government and private enterprises, 605 in private and private enterprises, 11 in BCS Administrative Association, 100 in Bangladesh Administrative Service Association and 80 government secretaries are building 6,500 thousand houses. 

Ashrayan Project-2 Director (Additional Secretary) said Mahbub Hossain told reporters that in the first phase, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over houses to about 6,000 families this month. The construction of one lakh more houses will be completed within a year in Mujib Borsho and the government will provide houses to nine lakh families in phases. 

He added that besides providing houses, the government will also take various income-generating programs in the future to improve the living standards of these landless, homeless widows, helpless, elderly, destitute and disabled people.
