Many child marriages took place amid the COVID pandemic situation in the country due to the closure of educational institutions. As per that, 633 schoolgirls in Tangail’s Bhuapur got married, among these, 424 students are at secondary level and 209 are madrasa students.

It is learned that there are 30 secondary schools and 18 Dakhil Madrasas in Bhuapur upazila. Currently, there are 7,744 female students in secondary and 2,463 female students in Madrasa.

According to teachers and parents, 633 schoolgirls became the victim of child marriage due to the closure of schools and madrasas for a long time. Among them are also 4 male students. Even, many schoolgirls became mothers of children!

The father of a student named Mehedi said that his son dropped out as the school was closed due to the COVID situation. As a result, we were forced to put him in the family business. We later married him off to a girl who lived nearby.

“We are the people of Char. I married off my daughter at a young age. We got her married as the school was closed for COVID and got a good-quality groom,” said Asab Ali Talukder, the father of an eighth-grade schoolgirl of Jamuna Charanchal High School.

Ruhulee High School principal Anwara Khatun said the number of students in my school is 154. As far as I know, 35 of these students got married.

Bhunapur Upazila Secondary Education Officer Md. Shahinur Islam said he is currently undergoing treatment after being infected with Covid-19, so he did not know anything about this.
