6 killed as truck falls into ditch in Madaripur

Six people were killed as a truck lost its control and fell into a ditch at Shibchar in Madaripur. The truck was carrying “some passengers”, including roof-casting material, police said.
The accident took place near the toll plaza of Arial Khan Bridge in the upazila around 9 pm on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Nirmal, Sohan, Pulak, toll plaza employees of Arial Khan bridge, Miraj, son of Kabir Hossain of Ramaganj village in Lalmohan upazila of Bhola, Arif, son of Nurul Islam of Islampur village of Char Fashion upazila and Hannan Gazi, son of Billal Gazi of Bhandaria upazila of Pirojpur.
According to the police, the truck was going to Dhaka from Barguna with roof-casting materials. On reaching the toll plaza of Arial Khan Bridge in Shibchar, the truck lost control and overturned and fell into a nearby ditch. Two people, including toll plaza employee Sohan, were killed on the spot. Five others were taken to hospital in critical condition, later, four more died.
Eyewitness Md. Mehedi Hasan said the truck speeded through the highway, broke the railing near the toll plaza and fell into a roadside ditch. The truck contained other goods, including roof-casting pipes. There were 8-10 passengers on the truck.
Shibchar Highway Police Station OC Mohammad Ali said two people were killed on the spot. Three more died after being taken to a local hospital. Another died on the way to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
The OC added that the truck was “carrying passengers” to Dhaka. It is believed that the accident took place when the truck driver tried to stop when he reached the toll road.
