The 35th span of the Padma Multi-Purpose Bridge has been installed, bringing a total of 5,250 meters of the structure into view.

The span number "2B" was placed at pillars 8 and 9 at the Mawa end of the bridge in Munshiganj on Saturday.

The 150-meter long span was due to be placed on Friday. But, the water level is very low in the spot where the span is to be placed and so the vessel carrying the crane that lifted the span, cannot reach there.

Earlier on October 25, the 34th span of the bridge was installed. Four spans were installed over the bridge in the current month.

Meanwhile, officials of the Padma Bridge project said that all 41 spans will be installed on the Multi-Purpose Bridge by the next two months.

“A total 41 spans will become visible on the bridge together in December, as the pace of work is going fast with maintaining proper health guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic,” Project Director of Padma Bridge Md Shafiqul Islam told BSS on October 18.

According to project details, the 36th span of the bridge will be placed on November 4, the 37th span on November 11, 38th on November 16, 39th on November 23 and the 40th on December 2. Besides, the last and 41st span of the Padma Bridge will set up on the 12th and 13th piers of the bridge on December 10, it said.

The Padma Bridge is the largest construction infrastructure since the independence of Bangladesh, which was initiated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The construction work began in December 2014 with own fund.

The construction of the main bridge is being made by China Major Bridge Engineering Company (MBEC), a Chinese contractor Company, and the river management is being done by Sino Hydro Corporation of China. The 6.15 km long bridge will have two segments over which road and railways will be set up.
