The government has decided to give jabs to 50 lakh people in the first phase subject to receiving the first consignment of Oxford-AstraZeneca's Covid-19 - produced at the Serum Institute of India.

Director General of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Abul Basar Mohammad Khurshid Alam said this while at a press conference held at the new building of DGHS this afternoon.

He said that according to new data from Oxford-AstraZeneca, the second dose could be given two months after the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine. That is why all 50 lakh doses of Covid vaccine received in the first shipment will be given to people at once in the first month.

"Earlier, we were told that the second dose should be given 28 days after the first dose," said the director general of the health department. As such, it was initially planned to vaccinate 25 lakh people in the first phase. But after learning the new rules yesterday, we changed the plan and decided to vaccinate 50 lakh people in the first phase. More vaccines will come in two months.

Additional Director General of the Department of Health, Professor Dr. Nasima Sultana and Professor Dr. Meerjady Sabrina Flora spoke on the occasion.
