5 held over Gazipur BCL leader Mashum murder

Five accused have been arrested in connection with the murder of BCL leader Syed Mashum Ahmed in Gazipur's Sreepur.

The arrested are Abul Kalam, son of Habibullah Qari of Beraiderchala area of ​​Sreepur, Shafiqul Islam, son of Shamsuddin of the same area, Nazir Hossain Joy, son of Abdul Jalil, Saiful Islam, son of Abdur Rashid and Harun Aur Rashid, son of Azharul.

Gazipur Superintendent of Police Mohammad Makshuder Rahman of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) said Syed Mashum Ahmed was an active member of the BCL and he was the presidential candidate of the Sreepur Upazila BCL. On July 22, some miscreants broke into Syed Mashum Ahmed's room and hit him with bricks to various parts of the body including the head. Later neighbors rescued and took him to Agargaon National Neuro Science Institute of Dhaka. 

The victim's uncle Mofazzal Hossain filed a case against the unidentified persons at Sreepur police station. The case later turned into a murder case when Mashum Ahmed died on July 23 while undergoing treatment. Soon after the case was registered, PBI Gazipur started a shadow investigation into the revelation and PBI Gazipur accepted the case on the instructions of PBI Headquarters Dhaka. 

The official further said that during the interrogation of accused Kalam, it was learned that due to a land dispute with local Maruf and Zaheer, Kalam and his accomplices broke into the Masum's room on Eid night to steal the original documents of the property. Later, Syed Masum Ahmed went home at around 3 am and when one of them tried to run away, Masum caught him. The other accused then hit Masum on the head and various parts of his body with bricks and fled. The accused left 3 pairs of sandals and 2 umbrellas used by them at the spot.

The arrested accused Kalam and his accomplices confessed to being involved in the incident during interrogation in police custody.
