5 children killed in Mirpur gas cylinder blast

At least five children were killed and ten others injured today when a gas cylinder exploded near a school in Rupnagar area in the capital’s Mirpur.

“The cylinder exploded when a vendor was pumping up balloons in Manipur School area around 3.30 pm, leaving five children dead on the spot and ten others critically injured,” said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rupnagar Police Station Abdul Kalam Azad.

Deceased are Shahin (10), Nupur (7), Farzana (9), Jannat (14) and Ramzan (8). Rupnagar Police Station Deputy Inspector (SI) Sumon confirmed the identity of the victims. At least 10 others were injured in the blast. They were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for treatment. The identity of the injured could not be known immediately.

Senior Station Officer of Mirpur Fire Service Station Anwar Hossain said three firefighting units rushed in and found five bodies lying on the spot.
