A rocket attack has hit the Spīn Ghar district in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province. Citing provincial officials in Nangarhar, IRNA reported that “five children were killed in Thursday’s attack”.
Mohammad Yasin, a regional official in Afghanistan, said the militant group Daesh (IS) had launched a rocket attack. The Taliban has “blamed the Afghan army” for the attack.
The rocket was fired while President Ashraf Ghani was visiting Nangarhar province on Thursday. The Afghan president has been touring the country’s conflict-torn provinces for the past few days.
Taliban attacks on the country’s military have increased in recent weeks since the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, the Taliban has claimed control of large areas of the country. The attack comes at a time when the Taliban have said their fight is only against the foreign troops. If foreign troops leave Afghanistan, they will surrender their weapons and return to religious education.
