At least 34 members of the Afghan security forces were killed and eight others wounded in an attack by Taliban fighters in the southern Afghan province of Takhar.

The attack took place on Tuesday night during an Afghan security force operation against the enemy in the Baharakh district of Takhar province. However, the Taliban has not yet commented on the attack.

Baharak is one of the districts of Takhar province, where 11 of the 16 districts have been largely controlled by Taliban fighters for years.

Takhar provincial health director Abdul Qayyum said the dead included the deputy police chief of Takhar province. There have been a long-standing dispute between the Taliban and Afghan security forces over the occupying of Baharakh.

Afghan security forces put the death toll at 34, but local political leaders say at least 42 people were killed in the attack. Jawad Hejri, a spokesman for the governor of Takhar province, said the clashes were still ongoing. The Taliban have also suffered heavy casualties in the conflict.

"Our security forces are moving forward to attack the enemy in the district," he added. On the other hand, the Taliban are planning to attack us from different houses in the area.
