A mobile court in Sirajganj jailed and fined 31 fishermen for defying the on-going temporary ban on hilsa fishing at the Jamuna river.

The raids were carried out at various points on the Jamuna River in Belkuchi and Chowhali upazilas from late night on Friday (September 22).

According to the mobile court sources, the fishermen were detained with mother hilsa and illegal current nets.

Belkuchi Upazila Executive Officer (Chowhali Upazila in additional charge) Anisur Rahman said the raids were carried out at Charbel, Mehernagar and Chowhali upazilas of Belkuchi upazila, Ghorarjan, Baghutia, Umarpur and Boalkandi points on Friday morning. At that time 31 fishermen were arrested for catching mother hilsa.

During the raid, 45,000 meters of current nets and 28 kg of mother hilsa were seized. The arrested fishermen were later jailed for seven days and the illegal current nets were burnt in public and the fish were distributed to local madrassas.

In order to increase the reproduction of hilsa fish, the government has banned catching hilsa in the rivers and seas of the country for 22 days from October 4 to October 25.

Chowhali Upazila Fisheries Officer Monwar Hossain, Belkuchi Fisheries Officer Shamim Reza, Naval Police Outpost in-charge Aminul Islam and Senior Field Assistant Shafiqul Islam Shafiq were present at that time.
