3 to die for rape, murder of Shariatpur housewife

A local court has sentenced three people to death for gang-raping and killing a housewife at Damuda upazila in Shariatpur. At that time, they were fined Tk 50,000 each. Besides, 9 other accused have been acquitted as they were not found guilty.
Shariatpur Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Abdus Salam Khan passed the verdict on Wednesday, in the presence of the convicts after a long hearing. After the verdict was announced, the convicts were sent to jail.
The convicts are Md. Morshed Ukil, son of Md. Lutful Khabir Of Madhyakodalpur village of Gosairhat upazila, Abdul Haq Mutait, son of Khorshed Mutait of Char Gharoa village of Damudya upazila and Zakir Hossain Mutait, son of Md. Majid Mutait of Daimichar Bhaira village.
Special Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Women and Child Abuse Suppression Tribunal Feroz Ahmed confirmed the information.
According to court sources, on January 20, 2019, Hawa Begum, wife of Khokon Ukil of Charvayra Ukilpara village in Damudya upazila, went to the house next door to pay mobile charges. At that time, Morshed, Abdul Haq and Zakir found her alone and raped her. They later hit her on the head and suffocated her to death. After the murder, they left her in a tin shed house of Mojibar Chokdar of the village.
The next day, on the morning of January 21, police recovered the body of the housewife and sent it to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital for autopsy. The same day, the victim's husband Khokon Ukil filed a murder case with the Damudya police station.
