Three consecutive rocket attacks have occurred on Tuesday night (local time) near the US embassy in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. — reports The Guardian.

According to the New York Post, sirens were heard across the green zone shortly after the rockets hit the US Embassy.

Three Katyusha rockets fell inside the Green Zone, where government buildings and foreign missions are located, Iraqi police told Reuters.

The rockets were launched from the Zafaraniyah district outside Baghdad, the Iraqi police said adding that “two rockets near landed the US embassy.”

However, no casualties were immediately reported.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran has recently intensified over the killing of top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani in a drone strike in Baghdad on January 3. In retaliation, Tehran launched a series of missiles aimed at the dome of American troops on Iraqi bases.

Meanwhile, five protesters were killed on Monday in three Iraqi cities as protesters across the country ramped up pressure on the government to implement long-awaited reforms.

Those killings came amid widespread anti-government demonstrations — which are still continuing.
