24 hours in onion field to prevent theft

Thieves’ irritation has increased in onion fields in Chapainawabganj. So farmers are guarding precious onions. They spend the whole day and night in the onion fields.

Onion farmers in the district said that they planted onion seeds two months ago in anticipation of higher prices. The onions will be suitable within 20-25 days. In the meantime, thieves’ infestation has increased in onion fields in different areas. So, farmers are guarding the fields day and night to prevent theft.

Onion farmer Amirul Haque of Hayatmur village of Sadar Upazila said that onion prices are high in advance. This year he cultivated onions in two bighas of land. Each bigha land cost Tk. 30,000 to 40,000. This time the onion yields quite well. But onion farmers will have to starve if the onions being theft.

Rubel Mia, another farmer in the same village, said that the thieves’ eyeing to the onion field because of the high prices of onion this time. On Wednesday night, thieves had stolen one and a half bigha’s onion. So I started keeping guard.

The farmer of the village, Minhajul Atik, said that I faced loss in four bighas of land onion cultivation last year. So this time, I cultivated onion varieties in just 17 Katha lands. But I could not take the onion of this little land because of the thieves. Theft cannot be stopped even after the guard.

Manjurul Huda, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension, said that soil and weather in Chapainawabganj are suitable for onion cultivation. This year, onion cultivars have been cultivated on 405 hectares of land in the district. The target has been identified as 5,278 metric tons. Onion production will exceed the target if it is possible to prevent theft.
