24 Madaripur youths facing cruel Mafia assault in Libya

24 youths from different areas of Madaripur, including four youths from Dhurail UP of Sadar Upazila, are being held captive by the mafia in Libya. This mafia group is demanding money by assaulting them and sending the video to family members. Police have arrested a broker involved in these incidents.

Talking to the family members of the victims, it is learned that a brokerage cycle targeting the simple, unemployed youths from different villages of the district and handed them to the mafia group by showing the temptation of jobs in different countries with high salaries. Many of the victims have to give their lives in the deep sea or at the hands of the mafia.

Since Monday (May 3), 24 youths from Madaripur have been detained by the Mafia in Libya. The mafia is torturing them and sending the videos to their families, demanding large sums of money. 

Recently a video of the torture went viral on Facebook where it was seen that a youth named Ershad Hossain Johnny of Chachar village in Dhurail UP of Madaripur Sadar upazila is being tortured by detaining him at a house in Libya. 

Going to Ershad Hossain’s house, it was learned that 24 people of the district, including four youths from the same village, were being detained and tortured for money.

It is learned that Zahid Khan Yusuf, a resident of Chachar village, is a broker. He has been involved in human trafficking for 4-5 years and illegally sent unemployed youths to Italy under a contract worth Tk 8-9 lakh. Through him, 300 youths went to Libya. Most of them reached Italy by sea. An organized ring of Yusuf Dalal is working in human trafficking.

It is also learned that the Madaripur’s 24 youths captivated by the mafia were scheduled to go to Italy through Zahid Khan Yusuf.

Recently, the administration has noticed the issue after seeing the viral video of torture. Police on Wednesday arrested broker Zahid Khan Yusuf along with five passports.

The families of the victims told the correspondent that the mafia is demanding money by sending that torture video to the family on IMO, Messenger. They are threatening to kill them if they do not pay.

“I sent my son to Libya two months ago through broker Zahid Khan Yusuf,” said Habu Hawladar, father of another prisoner named Hifzu Hawladar. “I had a contract with him for Tk 8 lakh. I have already given him Tk 2 lakh advance. The rest of the money was supposed to be paid after going to Libya.”

“But for two days, 24 people, including my son, have been detained by the Libyan mafia for two days,” he also said, lamenting that they are torturing them and demanding money by sending that video. 

“Where do we poor people get so much money? I want to see my son unharmed,” said Habu Hawladar.

Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station OC Kamrul Islam Miah said broker Zahid Khan Yusuf had been arrested on human trafficking charges. Five passports were recovered from him at that time. He will be questioned and sent to court.
