The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Narsingdi has fixed a target of producing 2,29,609 tonnes of winter vegetables from 9983 hectares of land in all the six Upazilas of the district during the current Robi season.

According to the DAE officials, farmers of the district have already started cultivating an early variety of winter vegetables in their homestead garden and other high lands from mid-October last.

Considering the demand of vegetables, the DAE has fixed a record production target of winter vegetables, Deputy Director of DAE Narsingdi Shovan Kumar Dhar said.

He said if the favourable climate condition prevailed a couple of weeks the above-mentioned production would be achieved, he said the DAE, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute are providing quality seeds, training and other agri-inputs to farmers for more vegetable cultivation this season.

Besides, the commercial banks are disbursing easy-term agriculture loans among the farmers.

Various kinds of winter vegetables like Bean, Brinjal, Cauliflower, Cabbage Radish, Lalshak, Poishak, Palongshak, Gourd, Potato, Cucumber, Tomato, Coriander etc grow aplenty in Shibpur, Belabo Raipura, Monohardi, Sadar and Polash Upazilas of the district.

Narsingdi districts, a vegetable surplus area, usually supply 30 to 40 percent of its production to the capital and other districts after meeting the local demand.

Farmers of different villages in the district said they have been working hard for more cultivation of winter vegetables from the last of October with a hope of getting more winter vegetables this year.
