North South University (NSU) authorities have decided to waive tuition fees by 20 percent for the upcoming fall semester in the face of student protests.

“The university authorities had decided to waive tuition fees and activity fees by 20 percent,” said Professor Atiqul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of the university, on Tuesday.

Earlier, for the third day in a row, a group of NSU students held a sit-in on campus demanding a 30 percent fee waiver on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the university authorities announced the decision.

During the protest, students demanded complete remission of activity fees such as computer lab fees, library fees and other fees. The students made the demand as they did not access to the lab-library on campus.

A representative of the university announced the reduction of fees this afternoon. However, many students are still protesting demanding a 30 percent waiver of tuition fees and complete remission of student activity fees, said the protesters.

Earlier, NSU authorities was given a 20 percent fee waiver during the summer semester due to economic losses for the COVID pandemic.
