A 20-km long traffic tail has been created from Tangail Bypass on Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge Highway to the east side of Bangabandhu Bridge.
Traffic congestion on the highway has been on the rise since the government announced its decision to resume public transport from 8 pm on Saturday (July 31) to 12 pm on Sunday (August 1), resulting in the 20-km long tailback.
Earlier, after the announcement to open garments and factories from Sunday, the Dhaka-bound people have flocked on the highway since Saturday morning. To save their jobs, people travel to Dhaka by open trucks, pickups, microbuses, private cars and motorbikes at several times the fare. Many have been seen walking to their destination.
Meanwhile, passengers and drivers of vehicles are suffering due to the tailback, especially, women and children are in extreme distress.
When tried to contact Elenga Highway Police OC Yasir Arafat and Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station OC Safiqul Islam over the phone, they could not be reached for comment.
