At least 20 people have been killed in an explosion of a fuel tanker in eastern Uganda. In addition, several others were seriously injured.

According to police, the accident took place in the western Ruburizi district of the country on Sunday, the Washington Post reported.

The fuel tanker caught fire when it was on the way from Kenya to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The fuel tanker reportedly got involved in the accident after its driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a stationary vehicle, which triggered the fire.

“Apart from burning shops, stalls, and a market the fire also burnt two vehicles,” said Martial Tumusiime, police spokesman in the area.

He said the injured were transported to nearby hospitals and the bodies have been taken to the mortuary.
