2 women killed in Rupganj food factory fire, 150 injured

The blaze has spread to the whole factory
Two women workers of Hashem Food Limited were killed in a blaze that broke out in the factory at Rupganj in Narayanganj. Besides, more than 150 workers were injured in the fire.
The witnesses said the two women jumped off from the 7th floor of the factory to escape the fire.
The deceased were identified as Swapna Rani, wife of Jati Sarkar of Sylhet and Mina Akhter, wife of Harun Mia of Golakandail Notun Bazar in Rupganj. The fire service recovered two bodies.
Besides, the injured have been shifted to different local hospitals including Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Earlier, a fire broke out at the factory in the Bhulta area in Rupganj around 5:30 pm on Thursday.
“The fire was originated from the ground floor of the factory around 5:30 pm and spread to the upper floors instantly,” said Al Amin, a factory worker.
Two women workers named Mina Akhter and Swapna Rani jumped off from the 7th floor to escape the fire and were killed, he added.
Dr. Shahadat Hossain of US Bangla Medical College Hospital said 40 of the injured were taken to the hospital and 10 to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The rest have been admitted to local hospitals.
Md. Abdul Al Arefin, Narayanganj Fire Service deputy director, said 11 units of Dhaka, Narayanganj, Kanchan and Demra Fire Service are working to control the fire. An operation is underway to “rescue the trapped workers” on the roof of the building. The exact cause of the fire is not yet known.
