It is buzzing in social media platforms and different publications that another university named Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) is being set up in Pirojpur despite having a university in neighboring district Gopalganj in the same name.
On July 16, Syed Ali Reza, the joint secretary of the education ministry, issued a notification seeking the opinion of the concerned authorities on the establishment of a university named Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Pirojpur. Later, the picture of the notification was spread throughout social media in various ways. And the students of BSMRSTU in Gopalganj are reacting angrily to this. They are urging the concerned authorities to take appropriate action against this decision.
Asked about this, Apu of the Department of Political Science of the university in Goplaganj said, "Two universities with the same name are really disappointing." For this, in the future, we will have to face the crisis of identity with our students. He also pointed out the irrationality of such work and hoped for appropriate action by the concerned authorities.
On 8 July 2001, the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) Act was passed in the Parliament. At present, the university has 12,000 students, 34 departments of 9 faculties, and is the fourth-largest university in the country in terms of the number of seats.
